“You fell in love with a person who doesn't exist,” wrote Sarah Kane. Not the wait for someone, but the non-existence of someone who we believe is there and instead isn't. No one at dinner with us. No one to drink and laugh with us. No person we thought we loved: the focus is the moment we understand we are alone, the moment we understand that that person does not exist. The dawn of consciousness is alienating, we feed on nothing, the glasses for toasting become empty. For a few moments we feel ourselves disappearing, becoming furnishing accessories in a distorted reality, a reality that doesn't exist, an unreal reality."
